Slik ble Irish Coffee oppfunnet

Irish Coffee er en velkjent irsk drink som er kjent i alle verdensdeler. Historien bak Irish Coffee

Helt til midten av 1900-tallet var det fremdeles vanlig at transatlantiske flygninger foregikk med store vannfly. En kald vinterdag landet en av dem på fjorden utenfor Foynes, i nærheten av den irske byen Shannon. Flyet hadde vært underveis fra New York i 18 timer, og passasjerene var både trøtte, kalde og slitne. Det hjalp heller ikke at de ble fraktet i åpne joller den siste biten inn til terminalen på kaien.

Der sto Joseph Sheridan klar. Han var kokk på den vesle restauranten som pleide å være passasjerenes første møte med Irland, og han visste at de trengte noe varmt å drikke. Men te, som irene selv foretrakk, var ikke noe for folk fra USA, så han pleide å lage en god kopp kaffe til dem.

Ti år senere satt en av passasjerene, forfatteren Stanton Delaplane, sammen med vennen Jack Koeppler hjemme i California. Jack eide restauranten Buena Vista i San Fransisco, og sammen prøvde de å gjenskape den irske kaffen.     Efter kriget hade flyget utvecklats så man baserade sig på landflygplatser och Foynes användes inte mer. Men man måste fortfarande mellanlanda för tankning på vägen mellan London och New York. Men de som drev restaurang och bar i Shannon var affärsmässiga nog till att kopiera idéen med Irish Coffe. Shannon
